Should You Write a Letter to the Seller?
You’ve done it. After months, maybe years of looking, you’ve found it: your dream home. You want the seller to know just how much this home means to you. If there was a way for them to understand who you are, what you value, they would have to pick you among their multiple offers. There has to be a way for them to understand that to you, this house will be more than just a house: it will be your home. Fortunately, there is a way to stand out from the crowd. You can write a letter to the seller. This letter is a cover letter of sorts, explaining your background and reasons for loving this home in particular. The reason why a carefully crafted letter can benefit you is because it adds emotion and humanity, a face to your name. It brings more factors to the table than the hard factors, like the monetary aspect. Say, for instance, you are a mother of three and this is the only house that has truly felt like home to you and all your children. Or maybe you are a veteran who has finally found their dream home after years of service. These factors can really allow the seller to connect with you! The seller may even find your story so moving that they pick your offer over ones that looked better without your letter. Not only can your story move them, but the sheer act of putting the effort into crafting the letter communicates a lot about you. Think about it: you receive multiple offers with no accompanying letters, except one with a clear case about how much they care about your home. Which will you go for? Beyond the content of the letter, the fact that someone even put the time in to write a letter shows dedication deserving of acceptance. If you write a letter to a seller, you want to be as respectful as possible. Paint an elegant picture of what the house means to you and how you are more deserving to live in it than other buyers. Don’t be afraid to get sentimental! If this is the only home you can picture yourself living in, let them know why! It's also smart to include a polished picture of you and your family so you can be more recognizable and relatable to them. While there’s no guarantee that the letter will do its job, it can only help you. And when it helps, it really helps. Trust us. More likely than not, this home is the seller’s baby. They may have started their life and raised a family in that home. They don’t want to sell it to just anybody. They want to pass it along to someone who deserves it. This letter is your chance to prove that you deserve it, not because of the financial gain, but because you will love it and cherish it as the seller likely has.
